Limerick City is the capital of The County Limerick. The City lies at a strategic point on the River Shannon. With its rich and colourful history, Limerick is a regional centre for shopping, dining and entertainment, and its well-known theatre, the Belltable Arts Centre, puts on some great plays. Also its City Charter of Incorporation is older than that of London, dating back to 1197. This is the home to the largest Georgian Quarter in Ireland outside Dublin. In 1651 after Cromwell’s forces captured the City, St. Mary’s Cathedral was used as a stable for the army’s horses. King John’s Castle is the westernmost Norman castle in Europe.
